What happens when you invite the wrong presence into your digital life?
Host, the fifth installment in Disturb Ink Books’ Sinister Century series, dives into the eerie side of 1990s horror, where the dawn of the internet opens a gateway to fear, and the line between the virtual and the real begins to blur in terrifying ways.
In these chilling tales:
- A Reddit thread pulls together a group of strangers with near-death experiences—only to reveal that something dark binds them
- A chance online encounter spirals into a face-to-face meeting, where hidden horrors come to light
- A tech-reliant company discovers that their digital connections come with chilling, unforeseen consequences
- A grieving woman turns to online chatrooms for solace, only to find that comfort can come with a dreadful cost
Edited by H. Dair Brown, this anthology weaves together spine-chilling horror and thriller tales from acclaimed and emerging authors David Farrow, Logan McConnell, Francis Verelle, and Dustin Engstrom.

Have you ever had a near-death experience?
I mean as close to “lights out” as you can possibly get. A hand that yanked you back from a crumbling precipice, a bullet that missed you by inches, a tangled shoelace that made you late for a train crash, etc. I’m curious how many of us have had a real brush with death.
Serious answers only please.

You’ll probably get a lot of military vets answering this one. I was stationed in Iraq for a bit, and every guy in my unit had a close call at some point. Buddy of mine came thiiis close to stepping on a landmine once, and our commander shot a suicide bomber half a second before he could press the button. The closest I ever got to dying was when a grenade went off near me and I got blown into the side of a building. Chunk of rebar went right through my chest but somehow missed my vital organs. I bet you’ll find lots of similar stories if you ask around.

Definitely echo this. And it’s not just combat vets either. One of the guys in my unit passed out during boot camp and almost died because the drill instructor thought he was faking it. Ended up he had severely low blood sugar, and the workouts pushed him so hard that his body just shut down.

Oh yeah, for sure. You’ve got to listen to your body or it’ll make you listen.

So I have epilepsy. Usually I can manage it just fine, but one day I had a pretty nasty seizure while I was cooking. Hit my head on a cabinet and started bleeding. I was home alone, and I’d left my phone in the other room, so I was just convulsing on the kitchen floor in a pool of my own blood. I probably would have died if my husband hadn’t come home early and gotten me to the hospital. He’d only stopped by the house to grab a change of clothes for the gym. Something totally small, but it saved my life.

I survived an active shooter situation at my high school.

Uhh my man, you gonna leave us hanging like that? What happened?

Some guy with an assault rifle got in and we went into lockdown. Two people were shot. Our teacher made us push the desks against the door and hunker down by the wall. I was close enough to the door to see the guy’s shadow, but he didn’t come in our classroom. The police eventually showed up and took the guy down.

I’m sorry but I don’t feel like talking about this anymore. I thought I’d be okay bringing it up again but I guess not.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - "Gateway to Fear - Host, the fifth volume, plunges into the unsettling world of early internet horror, where anonymity and digital connections become channels for darker forces. Each story is well-crafted, with vivid, realistic dialogue that pulls us directly into eerie encounters.
One standout is how each story, while spine-chilling, also educates—such as an unexpected yet fascinating insight into wine terminology, adding depth without detracting from the suspense." -Skyrock (Amazon Review)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - "A fascinating anthology of internet horror!
I thought that volume 6 of this anthology series was my favorite, till I read this one: it's a blast! Absolutely original stories, scary, chilling, and creepy! Especially the first one, the Reddit thread about near-death experiences: I read it twice, both times feeling chills all over! All the stories are gems!" -Milt Theo (Goodreads Review)
